Fresh hairstyles for 2017

For a fresh new year, why not try a new style to grab everyone’s attention?

Whether you brave the chop, dare to dye or simply want to revitalise your look, hairstylist to the stars Asgar Saboo gives us his recommendations on how you can change things up and start the New Year with a bit of va va voom.

Brilliant bangs

As seen on the catwalks of Saint Laurent and Alexander Wang, a fringe will instantly add spice to your style. Hot off the runway and recently modelled by ramp beauty Kendall Jenner, this is one of the biggest style changes you can make with minimal maintenance effort. Keep hair sleek, straight and smooth to create a glam look for parties or grunge it up by adding a few waves and product to add instant edge.

Tips: If you brave the bangs, keep the length below the eyebrows for a modern look and if you don’t want a blunt fringe, feather the ends slightly so the style isn’t as heavy.

Contemporary crop

Last year’s lob takes a dramatic turn for the New Year with the contemporary crop, a sexy new take on the traditional bob, as seen on Jennifer Lawrence. The key here is having lots of layers to add texture to the hair, and using a salt spray or texturising product to create a mussed up, laid back look. This is perfect as it’s both sophisticated and modern at the same time, perfect for a night out or casual day relaxing. Not brave enough to go for the chop?

Tip: Cheat your way to this trend with a faux bob – simply scrunch the hair with salt spray and divide into two loose ponytails. Twirl the ends up and under, and then secure with plenty of grips, and you’ll have a new look for one night only, which is what Gigi Hadid did recently.

Celebrate natural waves

If you’ve been looking for an excuse to ditch the straighteners, now you’re in luck. The catwalks for next season boasted natural texture and waves for a relaxed, bohemian look, which is perfect for dressing down a fussy look or adding a casual element to your style, as seen on Sienna Miller and Blake Lively. However don’t let your hair get too frizzy, as the locks still need to look alluring and in good condition. Use a mousse or leave-in conditioner and let the hair dry naturally, or use a diffuser and gently scrunch the curls.
Tip: Ensure you finish with hair oil at the ends to make sure that the style looks perfectly shiny and frizz-free.

Copper and autumnal reds
This dramatic colour is set to be a major trend for 2017, and it’s certainly not for wallflowers. It’s cooler and quirkier than a traditional red tone, but it’s also perfectly matched for someone with a chic and sophisticated sense of style. Take your inspiration from the likes of Emma Stone and Julianne Moore, and go for something which is dramatic but not too bright. Red hair takes a lot of care and attention, so treat your hair to a colour treatment masque at least once a week and make sure you go back to the salon for regular touch-ups.
Tip: If you’re in between salon visits then use a glossing spray or serum to add some extra shine which will last until your next colour fix.
