One of the most expensive cities in the United States and also termed as a “Crazy City”, San Francisco is packed with surprises. Situated on the tip of a peninsula and surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, this Californian city is known for its cool summers, foggy views, steep rolling hills, eclectic mix of architecture, and endless landmarks.
WHERE TIME STANDS STILL
Once called it “the bridge that couldn’t be built”, and today it is one of the seven wonders of the modern world. A must on every traveller’s wishlist, the Golden Gate Bridge is definitely San Francisco’s most famous landmark. Visit the bridge at any time of the day to get a magnificent view of the city skyline and some cool breeze. The colour of the bridge is an orange vermilion called “international orange,” which the original committee felt it contrasted well against the sky and ocean. A picture-perfect spot for shutterbugs!
HAPPENING HUB
World-class department stores, top brands, designer labels and posh hotels are the hallmarks of this vibrant downtown area. Today, Union Square retains its role as the ceremonial “heart” of San Francisco, serving as the site of many public concerts and events, art shows, impromptu protests, private parties and events, winter ice rink and the annual Christmas tree and Menorah lighting. Catch a cable car or just take a few moments to enjoy an outdoor concert in the square.
ORIENT FLAVOUR
Rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake, Chinatown is the oldest establishment in North America. This densely populated residential neighbourhood was deliberately designed as an “Oriental City.” Churches, schools, social and cultural organisations sustain the Chinese-American community. The restaurants, gift shops and grocery stores are simply irresistible here. Don’t forget to visit one of the oldest Chinese restaurants in San Francisco called the Empress of China. Frequented by its fair share of celebrities over the years, you could dine like a star here.
MEETING SEA LIONS
The most visited destination in San Francisco, Pier 39 is a must on your list of things to do in San Francisco. Bustling with people, it offers bay views, dining, entertainment, shopping and attractions including Aquarium of the Bay. Take the Bay cruise which takes you directly underneath the Golden Gate Bridge on a smooth, onehour journey that provides some of San Francisco’s most stunning photo-ops of Alcatraz, the city skyline, the Bay Lights and more. And there’s a bar on board, so you can sip while you sail. One of the best attractions of Pier 39 is the sighting of sea lions who camp out on the pier’s K Dock.
PEAK-A-BOO
Bikers, hikers and motorists can get a panoramic view of the entire city of San Francisco from this 910-foot summit. Twin Peaks is the last San Francisco habitat for the mission Blue Butterfly, an endangered species that was once commonly found throughout the city. Spend some time here gazing around or simply soaking up the glorious sun.
