पक्ष्यांच्या नावांचे प्रमाणीकरण करण्याची कल्पना मांडण्यात आल्यावर त्यावर विविध मते व्यक्त होत आहेत. या प्रमाणीकरणामागचे कारण काय, ते कसे केले जाईल, त्याचे निकष काय हे सांगणारा हा लेख.

का ही वर्षांपूर्वी विदर्भात पक्षी निरीक्षणासाठी गेलो, की स्थानिक लोकांना तेथे आढळणाऱ्या सामान्य पक्ष्यांची नावे मी विचारीत असे. वेड्या रघुकडे बोट दाखवून मी एका ग्रामस्थाला विचारले, 'या पक्ष्याला तुम्ही काय म्हणता जी?''हा आंधळा मिठ्ठू हाये जी, दगड मारला तरी उडत नाही !' होल्याकडे बोट दाखवल्यावर त्याने सांगितले, 'हा मंदबुद्धी पक्षी, गाडी आली तरी उडत नाही.' दुसऱ्या ठिकाणी भारद्वाज (ग्रेटर कौकल) पक्ष्याबद्दल विचारले असता कुणी कुंभारकावळा, कुंभारकुकडा, चांभारकावळा अशी नावे मिळाली. अमरावतीला तर एकाने सांगितले, 'हा नपिता पक्षी, डोळे बघा कसे लाल हायेत, न पिता !' आवड म्हणून मी विदर्भातील फासेपारध्यांच्या बोलीतील पक्ष्यांच्या नावांची सूची तयार केली. पारधी बेड्यावर जाऊन त्यांना मी पक्ष्याचे चित्र दाखवून विचारीत असे 'आ पंखेरुना नाम सु छं?' त्यांच्याकडून मिळालेली काही नावे मला खूप आवडली. फासेपारध्यांना पक्ष्यांचे खूप सखोल ज्ञान असते. जसे तांबूस पाठीच्या खाटिक (रुफस-बॅक्ड श्राईक) पक्ष्याला 'दुधकटोरा' हे त्याच्या आवाजावरून दिलेले नाव, तिन्ही प्रजातीच्या बटलावांना (बटनक्वेल - यांना केवळ तीनच बोटे असतात) दिलेली 'तीबोटी' हे सामान्य नाव; तसेच पिवळ्या पायाच्या बटलाव्याला दिलेले 'गवतम रूसी' (गौतम ऋषी नव्हे) हे त्याच्या गवतात लपून बसण्याच्या सवयीचे वर्णन करणारे समर्पक नाव!
हॉर्नबिल पक्ष्याचे उदाहरण तर फार मजेदार आहे. कोकणात हॉर्नबिल पक्ष्यांना (मलबार पाईड व ग्रेट पाईड हॉर्नबिल) काकण, ककणेर, गरुड, माडगरुड अशी नावे आहेत, तर विदर्भात (इंडिअन ग्रे हॉर्नबिल) तिनचोचा, धनचीडी, शिंगचोचा अशी नावे मिळाली. त्याच्या आवाजावरून 'कीळकिळा' हे नांव सुद्धा मिळाले. माळढोक (ग्रेट इंडिअन बस्टर्ड) पक्ष्याला विदर्भात माळढोक म्हणून कुणीही ओळखत नाही. विदर्भात त्याला 'हुम' हे त्याच्या मिलन काळातील आवाजावरून पडलेले समर्पक नाव आहे. विदर्भात 'ढोक' हे नाव स्टॉर्क प्रजातीच्या पक्ष्यांसाठी वापरले जाते; तसेच 'स्पॉटेड आऊलेट'ला ग्रामीण भागात त्याच्या बटबटीत डोळ्यांमुळे 'मटमट्या' म्हणतात. इतरत्र पिंगळा म्हणतात. मेळघाटात त्याला डूडा म्हणतात.

महाराष्ट्रात पक्ष्यांना विविध ठिकाणी वेगवेगळी स्थानिक नावे आहेत. असे म्हणतात की दर शंभर मैलावर भाषा (खरे तर बोली) बदलते; तसेच काहीसे पक्ष्यांच्या नावांच्या बाबतीत खरे आहे. त्यामुळे वेगवेगळ्या पक्ष्यासंबधीच्या पुस्तकांमध्ये पक्ष्यांना वेगवेगळी नावे दिली गेली. अर्थात आपल्याकडे नावांचे खूप मोठे भांडार निर्माण झाले.

पूर्वीचे कार्यमराठी भाषेतील थोड्या-थोड्या अंतरावर आढळणारी विविधता आणि विविध बोलींमधील विविधता अभ्यासून त्याचे संकलन सर्वप्रथम पक्षीऋषी श्री मारुती चितमपल्लींनी अभ्यासली आणि त्यांच्या 'पक्षीकोशात' त्यांनी ही आपल्यासमोर मांडली. मराठी व्यतिरिक्त त्यांनी इतर भाषांतील नावेसुद्धा संकलित केली.

त्यानंतर आलेल्या 'दक्षिण भारतातील पक्षी' (२००५) या प्रशांत महाजन लिखित (प्रकाशक - बॉम्बे नॅचरल हिस्ट्री सोसायटी, मुंबई) व नंतर आलेल्या 'बर्ड्स ऑफ महाराष्ट्र' (२०११) या डॉ. सतीश पांडे, प्रमोद देशपांडे व निरंजन संत लिखित पुस्तकात (प्रकाशक - इला फाउंडेशन, पुणे) महाराष्ट्रात आढळणाऱ्या सर्व पक्ष्यांची मराठीतील नावे देण्यात आली. या व्यतिरिक्त पक्षीमित्रांनी संकलित केलेल्या अनेक जिल्ह्यांच्या पक्षी सूचीसुद्धा उपलब्ध आहेत. या पुस्तकांचा आणि काही पक्षी सूचींचा अभ्यास करून सारासार विचार केला असता काही गोष्टी लक्षात येतात. प्रत्येक सूचीमध्ये किमान काही पक्ष्यांची नावे वेगळी असल्याचे दिसून येते. सर्व सूचींमध्ये पक्ष्यांच्या नावांची एकवाक्यता नसल्याचे आढळते. याचा अर्थ असा नव्हे, की ती नावे चुकीची आहेत.या विविधतेचा आणखी सखोल अभ्यास होणे गरजेचे आहे. महाराष्ट्रातील कितीतरी बोलीभाषांचा चांगला अभ्यास झालेला नाही. त्या बोलीमधील पक्ष्यांच्या (तसेच इतरही प्राण्यांच्या) नावांचा अभ्यास व्हायला पाहिजे. त्यामुळे आपल्या ज्ञानात भर पडून आपल्याला या विषयात प्रगती साधण्यात मदत होईल. सापाचे एकच उदाहरण देता येईल. सापांवरील पुस्तकात बँडेड क्रेट या विषारी सापाला 'पट्टेरी मण्यार' हे नाव दिलेले आहे; पण तो साप जिथे आढळतो त्या भंडारा, गोंदिया जिल्ह्यात त्याला कुणीही या नावाने ओळखत नाही. त्या परिसरात या सापाला 'सतरंज्या' असे अतिशय समर्पक नाव आहे. त्याच्या अंगावरील सतरंजीसारख्या पट्ट्यांवरून हे नाव पडले आहे.

पुढील दिशामारुती चितमपल्लींनी पक्ष्यांच्या नावांबाबतीत केलेले कार्य सर्वोत्कृष्ट मानता येईल. त्यांनी पक्षीकोशाच्या मनोगतात त्यांचा आणि डॉ. सालीम अलींचा पक्ष्यांच्या प्रादेशिक नावांसंबंधी झालेला संवाद दिलेला आहे. त्यावर आधारित काही मुलभूत नियम जर आपण तयार केले, तर आपल्याला पक्ष्यांच्या मराठी प्रमाण नावांची सूची तयार करता येईल का असा विचार गेल्या अनेक वर्षांपासून माझ्या डोक्यात घोळत होता. तसा प्रयत्न करायचे मी ठरविले आणि मग या उपलब्ध नावांचा अभ्यास मी केला. मग ही आदर्श नावे कशी असावीत याबाबतचे मी ठरविलेले नियम साधारणतः असे आहेत.१. प्रथम पक्ष्याच्या गोत्रासाठी योग्य नाव ठरविले जावे. उदा. किंगफिशरच्या सर्व प्रजातींसाठी ढिवर (किंवा धिवर), स्टॉर्कच्या सर्व प्रजातीसाठी करकोचा, 'क्रेन'साठी क्रौंच, इग्रेटसाठी बगळा, हेरॉनसाठी ढोकरी, ग्रीबसाठी टिबुकली इ.२. त्यानंतर पक्ष्याच्या प्रजातींसाठी नाव ठरविले जावे. त्यासाठी इंग्रजी सामान्य नाव (Common English Name) आधार म्हणून वापरावे. उदा. व्हाईट-ब्रेस्टेड किंगफिशरसाठी पांढऱ्या छातीचा ढिवर.

३. काही प्रजातींच्या शास्त्रीय नावाचा अर्थ समजून घेऊन व तर्क वापरून तसे मराठी नाव तयार करावे. उदा. Ruff या पक्ष्याचे शास्त्रीय नाव Philomachus pugnax असे आहे. त्यावरून त्याचे नाव 'भांडखोर पाणलावा' असे करता येईल.४. नावे शक्यतो सध्या बोलल्या जाणाऱ्या मराठीत असावीत. अर्थात ती संस्कृत प्रचुर नसावीत (उदा. पाईड किंगफिशरसाठी शबल मिनरंक, पिवळ्या गळ्यासाठी पितकंठी इ.). हिंदीतील नावेसुद्धा शक्यतो टाळावीत (उदा. पत्रींगा, किलकिला इ.). काही खूपच रुळलेली हिंदी नावे कंसात ठेवता येतील, उदा. कबुतर, हरियाल, मुनिया इ. ५. आधीच प्रसिद्ध असलेली, झालेली अथवा रुळलेली काही नावे तशीच राहू द्यायला हरकत नाही. उदा. लेसर व्हीसलिंग टिलसाठी अडई हे नाव. यामध्ये नीलकंठ, चक्रवाक, कोकिळा, पावश्या, चातक ही समाज मनात रुळलेली नावेसुद्धा आहेत. नीळकंठ पक्ष्याचा कंठ नव्हे, तर पंख निळे असतात; पण त्याचे नाव नीळपंख केल्याने त्याच्या नावातील सांस्कृतिक महत्त्व संपून जाईल.

६. अर्थहीन तरीही अनेकदा वापरले गेलेली नावे टाळावीत. उदा. खंड्या, बंड्या आदी.७. अडचण वाटल्यास पक्ष्याच्या आवाजावरून; तसेच सवयीवर आधारित नावे ठेवावीत. उदा. गुंडूर बटलावा त्याच्या डूरडूरणाऱ्या आवाजावरून.

एकदा नियम ठरल्यानंतर काही नावांचा गोंधळ आपोआप सुटतो. उदा. काही ठिकाणी दमाईझील क्रेनला कांड्या करकोचा संबोधले जाते; पण एकदा आपण क्रेनसाठी क्रौंच (आणि स्टॉर्कसाठी करकोचा) हा पर्यायी शब्द ठरविल्यामुळे दमाईझील क्रेनसाठी करकरा क्रौंच हे नाव त्याच्या आवाजावरून ठरविता येते. मग इतर क्रौचांना सायबेरीयन क्रौंच, सामान्य क्रौंच, सारस क्रौंच अशी नावे चपखल वाटतात.

साधारणतः हे नियम वापरून मी पक्ष्यांच्या मराठी नावांची पहिली सूची जानेवारी २०१५ मध्ये पुणे येथे पार पडलेल्या महाराष्ट्र पक्षिमित्र संमेलनात मांडली व त्यावर पक्षीमित्रांची मते मागविली होती.

पक्ष्यांची जातीवाचक नावे? संमेलनातच काही पक्षीमित्रांनी जातीवाचक नावे नसावीत असे सुचविले (उदा. मराठा सुतार, ब्राह्मणी मैना आदी). येथे मला नमूद करावेसे वाटते की डॉ. सतीश पांडे यांच्या 'लॅटिन नेम्स ऑफ इंडिअन बर्ड्स एक्सप्लेन्ड' पुस्तकात स्पष्ट उल्लेख आढळतो की ब्राह्मनी मैना, ब्राह्मनी काईट व ब्राह्मनी डक या तीन पक्ष्यांच्या नावांचा ब्राह्मण जातीशी कुठलाही संबंध नाही. ब्राह्मनी या शब्दाचा अर्थ लालसर-तपकिरी रंग असा होतो. त्यामुळे या तीन पक्ष्यांची मराठीतील समर्पक नावे अनुक्रमे भांगपाडी मैना, समुद्री घार व चक्रवाक अशी आहेत. मराठा सुताराचे इंग्रजी नावसुद्धा बदलले असून, यलो क्राउन्ड वूडपेकर अर्थात पिवळ्या-मुकुटाचा सुतार असे करता येईल.अनेक पक्षीमित्रांनी कळविलेली मते विचारात घेऊन मराठी नावांमध्ये आणखी काही दुरुस्त्या मी केल्या आहेत. पण अजूनही मी पक्षीमित्रांच्या सूचना मागविल्या आहेत आणि त्या मिळत आहेत. त्या सर्व सूचनांचा विचार केल्यानंतर पक्ष्यांच्या मराठी नावांची दुसरी सूची तयार करण्यात येईल. ती मी महाराष्ट्र पक्षिमित्र संघटनेच्या कार्यकारी समितीला पाठविणार आहे. त्यावर एकमत होताच पुढील महाराष्ट्र पक्षिमित्र संमेलनात ती प्रकाशित व वितरीत करण्यात येईल. पक्ष्यांच्या मराठी भाषेतील प्रमाण नावांची सूची प्रकाशित करण्याचा उपक्रम राबविणारे महाराष्ट्र हे देशातील पहिलेच राज्य असेल. राज्यातील या बातम्या आणि इतर प्रसार माध्यमांमधील बातम्या बघून गोव्यातील पक्षीमित्रांनी कोंकणी भाषेतील पक्ष्यांची नावे संकलित करण्याचे काम सुरूसुद्धा केले आहे! महाराष्ट्र पक्षिमित्र व बॉम्बे नॅचरल
