Hairstyles that rocked the red carpet
The red carpet at the Academy Awards is not just about who wore what. The celebrated awards ceremony is also a time when the city’s fashionistas look out for trends, especially when it comes to interesting hairdos. Though this year’s awards night didn’t see too many trends, except for Scarlett Johansson’s bold mohawk look and the shorn hair trend which both ScarJo and Rosamund Pike sported, we did spot some everyday styles that worked well on the red carpet too. Here are a few actresses who rocked the red carpet with their casual yet chic hairstyles…

Anna Kendrick The Up in the Air actress Anna Kendrick was quite a stunner at the Oscars. She looked resplendent in her peach gown and classic hairdo. Playing with her waves, Anna went for a classic chignon to go with her outfit. Uncluttered and beautiful, her look screamed of her natural personality.

Dakota Johnson She might have sported this look in her film, Fifty Shades of Grey, but Dakota looks every bit cute in this asymmetrical fringe hairstyle. She just kept it simple by tying it up and even went for a slight messy fringe instead of completely straightening it. What’s more? Her hairdo went well with the dress too.

Emma Stone Emma Stone was undoubtedly among the best dressed at the Oscars. And we’d like to award her brownie points for her hairdo too. The side-swept look spelled sheer elegance. We also loved how she maintained the length of her hair in casual waves.

Jennifer Lopez Singer-actor Jennifer Lopez looked dreamy in her brown sheer gown. But what we really liked about her look is that she kept her hairstyle simple by sporting a ponytail. Now, all you girls who worry about going over the top for the gown-look can take a cue from JLo.

Keira Knightley Keira Knightley, who looked gorgeous in a net-and- satin gown that had flower motifs and graphic text, sported a simple yet casual hairstyle. She just played with her waves and chose a head band to go with the look. This mom-to-be sure carried off this look with elan.

Sienna Miller While most of her contemporaries chose white, this American-born British actress looked resplendent in a blue-black fishtail gown. Sienna Miller worked on her look quite well, pairing her outfit with a side twist hairdo. What we really liked about her hairstyle is that it was casual yet classy. Sienna’s overall look was very simple, as the actress went for a minimal-accessory look.

Recent red carpet events witness hairstyle makeovers on male celebrities

1956123

While men trying radical new hairstyles is nothing new, the recent Hollywood red carpet events had the  males dazzle with their mane choices. Man of the moment Jared Leto grabbed eyeballs first at the Golden Globes for his slicked back messy bun, also known as the Man Bun. Fans of this do, include football star David Beckham but few would dare to pull it off at a prestigious awards function. Joining him was Joaquin Phoenix, who twisted his salt and pepper mane in a low slung knot. Johnny Depp also stood out for his new blonde surfer boy look. However, it’s not just the bun, a conventionally female do  that’s being adopted by men. At the SAG awards, Leto upped the style quotient by showing off his perfect ombré mane that sent Twitter in a tizzy with fans saying his hair deserves its own award. Bangs, a huge trend of last year were seen on males at the recent Lanvin Fall 2014 runway show. Are men ready to push boundaries when it comes to new styles?

REMOVE OLD SCHOOL THOUGHT

Men are more open to trying out new styles says hairstylist Perry Patel. “Something like a man bun is bound to make the wearer get noticed. In fact, fringes were often sported by kinds during the Medieval era. I think today people are more accepting and are integrating both masculine and female trends. With the new generation being more open I think this will continue,” he says, adding that sadly very few Indian males want that change. “It’s important to try out new styles — some guys can even carry off a top knot.”

INDIAN MEN NOT READY
Abhirup Nandi, senior stylist, SAKS hair and beauty India, says a minimalist style with an edge is preferred by men in India. “In the coming years, men will evolve with their own independent sense of fashion, as 2014 will be the year of aviator hairstyles sported by those like Elvis Presley, Leonardo DiCaprio and Justin Bieber. Hair care and styling are the two major aspect of any hairstyle and men should have at least two variations of styling products like wax for a matt look and gel for more definition or even a mix of both depending  on their mood, clothes, etc. The ombré hair do would be interesting for men but possibly limited to a few. Men still prefer simpler and quicker styles that require little time.”

UNDERSTAND THE REQUIREMENTS
The emphasis is still on more classic hairstyles, says Sebastien Cousin, style director, Jean-Claude Biguine Salon and Spa. “While these trends are great, I’m not sure many men are ready for it. Men abroad do experiment more with highlights and lighter colours but here people are still limited in their choices. While some men are willing to go more artistic, others prefer the classic and professional look,” he says.
