Winter hair care tips for a luscious mane

As temperatures dip in the city (although not as much as we’d like it to), your skin will be among the first things that will get affected. Dryness, flakiness and chapped lips are a common complaint, which can be dealt with an array of skincare products. However, your hair also takes the brunt, thanks to the dry weather and cool wind that make a brief appearance this time of the year. Here are five mistakes that can wreak havoc on your mane and how you can avoid them… Winter often causes flakiness in your scalp, which is why oiling your hair is important. A warm oil massage will work wonders on your hair strength and texture, and also make your mane shinier. Tricologists recommend oiling your hair a night before you wash it, so that the oil works its magic overnight. While walking around with wet hair isn’t exactly an ideal option this time of the year, using hair dryers will simply dry out your hair, causing breakage and making them brittle. Instead, opt for air dryers. These work on the same premise as your regular dryer but with cold air, which won’t damage your tresses. Towel dry your hair, wait for 20 minutes and then use the air dryer.

Lifestyle choices also play a significant role in how healthy (or unhealthy) your hair looks and feels. During the winter months, your skin and hair need extra hydration, which is why drinking adequate water is important. And make it a habit to visit your hair stylist to snip off those split ends regularly.

Give your mane some extra TLC by pampering it with a deep conditioning treatment every two weeks. Experts say that this will help replenish lost moisture, which is commonplace during winter.Other benefits include nourishing and strengthening the hair, making it shine and improving its elasticity. A lot of women assume that they can skip shampooing their hair by a day or two during winter because they sweat less but this will only make their hair texture worse, say hair experts. Stick to your routine of washing and conditioning twice or thrice a week -this will ensure that your scalp is clean and you don’t suffer from dandruff.

Hair Care in Winter

Winter fashion: Match hairstyle with beard

Those who took part in Movember, an annual event involving the growing of moustaches to raise awareness about men’s health issues, can continue growing their facial hair and match it with the right hairstyle.

Winter is the perfect time to grow out a beard. From side fringe to long hair, celebrity hairstylist Asgar Saboo shares tips on how to match your hairstyle with beard.

The tips are as follows:

Side fringe hairstyle with short and shaggy beard: With Geek chic continuing to grow in popularity, a side fringe is the perfect hairstyle to accompany a short shaggy beard. The beard will add a masculine touch to your side fringe hairstyle. In order to really make this look work, ensure that the sides of your hair are kept at a reasonable length and allow your fringe to grow to the point that it can be swept to the side effectively.

Short and slick hair with stubble beard: For short and slick hair, the person who always comes to mind is Ryan Gosling, whose hair suits his short well-kept stubble perfectly. By having a smart hairstyle, the stubble adds a touch of masculinity and still maintains a casual look. Perfect for work and play.

The top knot hairstyle with trimmed and shaped beard: This style for men’s hair really rocketed in 2014 with celebrities such as Colin Farrell and Bradley Cooper showcasing the look. This look is perfect for those not wishing to spend too much time scrutinising their facial hair. Be sure to keep your facial hair trimmed and well-shaped, as this will ensure you maintain a relatively smart appearance whilst retaining that on-trend edge.

Long hair with full long beard : The long swept back hair has been brought to our attention after Chris Hemsworth showed off its full potential. When sweeping the hair back behind your ears, a full beard is recommended. The main issue with this look is that you can often look too casual, bordering on scruffy. By shaping your beard regularly and keeping your hair swept back neatly, this look will become diverse enough to match with a smart suit.

Men’s grooming: 5 popular winter hairstyles

Just like you update your wardrobe every winter, why not change your hairstyle too? Julie Robinson, international master barber, tells us what’s hot this season.

Celebs

“Today, we’re seeing men’s hairstyling fashion heading back towards the convention of traditional cuts. But at the same time, men are becoming more experimental with weight lines and hair lengths in their cuts. This amalgamation of styles produces exciting possibilities and leads to modern and versatile haircuts, which retain tradition but can be worn in a number of different ways.” Here are five trendy winter haircuts, as worn by your favourite celebrities.

THE SKIN FADE
Currently in vogue, this hairstyle is a distant cousin of the undercut. In skin fade, the sides are clipped to the maximum, so much so that the hair pretty much disappears into the hairline. The hair is cut short around the crown, then, working forward, directed and pulled back towards the crown to maintain length at the front.Sport this look, if you want to hide a receding hairline! For a bolder look, go lighter by using hair colour. If you want to be slightly more discreet, use a darker colour.
1930s CLASSIC GENT’S CUT
Beckham brought this haircut back in vogue when he sported it at the Royal Wedding. This style is created by tightly clipping the back and sides while leaving length at the top. It gives a tight line around the ears and the nape of the neck as the hair is faded below the curve of the head.Alternate versions of this cut are created by the hair being clipped higher into the curve of the head, to produce a much more dramatic look. The longer hair on top is then swept back with a parting.

THE SEXY BED HEAD LOOK
Gravity-defying and drastic is the best way to describe this hairstyle! Since it is meant to look messy and unpolished, style your hair with your fingers, instead of a comb. You can ruffle it with your hand, shake your head from side to side, or even roll around in bed until it’s in perfect disarray. The top of the hair is left about an inch and a half to 2 inches long and cut into, to apply texture. The back and sides are clipped to taper into the neck and ears, using the technique outlined above.

CASUAL SWEPTBACK HAIR
Looking for a vintage swept-back hairstyle, that won’t budge but also doesn’t look too unnatural? If yes, go for the casual sweptback look. The length of the hair should be 2 inches all around; ensure that the edges are left very natural. Texturing the tips all around would apply a softer finish. It is the perfect after-work or weekend look, for when you want to look relaxed but ontrend. Ombre tips look great with this style because they reflect the light at the top of your hair for a subtle warm glow.

FRENCH CROP
Also known as Caesar crop, here the hair is cut short on the sides and back, while the top and front sections are kept a little longer, usually worn as a fringe. For a formal occasion, you can neatly comb back your hair from the front. For a more laid-back and casual look, just leave the front hair loose and use your hands to push them back when they fall on your forehead. It is the perfect hairstyle for men working in the corporate and government sectors.
