Hair I come, South Africa

After India’s 76-run victory against Pakistan, the next big highlight of this World Cup and for Virat Kohli fans is the player’s latest hairdo.

On Thursday – days before the crucial match against South Africa today – Kohli walked out of a salon in Melbourne sporting a Ronaldo-like mohawk. And in less than 24 hours, he crossed the 20-million mark to become the second most followed Indian sportsperson on Facebook, behind only the God of cricket, Sachin Tendulkar. Virat has always said he likes to stay ‘on trend’, but when it comes to his hairstyles, the vice captain clearly stays ahead of them, like in 2013, when he was spotted with a new, ‘angled eyebrow cut’ (left) in Delhi. And he’s also not the only one to go for ‘World Cup special’ hairdos. Here’s a look.

Shikhar Dhawan revealed his new haircut on the day of the India-Pak match last week. Is Virat’s new hair a week later the next in a series of weekly style-updates to come from our boys? We’ll know soon!

Post-win euphoria Right after winning the World Cup in 2011, the Indian skipper went clean-shaven all the way. If speculations are to be believed, Dhoni had kept a mannat that he would shave his head if India won, and that’s how he proudly posed with the trophy. In 2013, the hairstyle-savvy Dhoni had sported a mohawk during the IPL (right).

Kabhi brown, kabhi straight Not really known for his on-pitch style statements, the Master Blaster turned a few heads when he decided to colour his curly locks brown during the 2011 World Cup. A year later, he surprised everyone again, when he decided to get his hair straightened for the Asia Cup, even though not everyone loved the absence of his famed curls.

Going blonde Zaheer Khan getting a blonde streak right before the 2011 World Cup proved lucky for him, as the bowler became the top wicket-taker in the tournament.

Lizard or zebra cut, what’s your latest hairstyle, Bhopal?

 [ad name=”HTML”]

Who said you can get a tattoo only on your skin? The latest trend is to trim your hair in such a way that it appears as if you’ve tattooed your head! Sounds wacky? Well, this new trend of getting a hair tattoo is gaining popularity with the city’s guys. Boys can be seen flaunting their funky hairstyles that are designed in various patterns. From a lizard cut, to zebra patterns, to a human face – the hairstylists are busy coming up with trendy designs. And unlike permanent tattoos, you can change the look of your head with a little trim here and shave there. No needles, no pain – a hair tattoo is all about design and style!

Up to `2000 for a hair tattoo
Naresh Sen, owner of Ideal Salon, says, “Young boys often come demanding a hair tattoo. But these tattoos are not designed with needles and ink; we restyle the hair with the help of hair clippers and razors. One of my clients asked me for a lizard haircut, which was the most interesting design for me to make. Various patterns that are popular as body tattoos are also designed on the scalp. Some guys also ask for highlights on these designs.”
The cost for a hair tattoo ranges from `500-`2000. Amit Nagar, manager at Absolute Spa and Salon, says, “Bahut log toh apne naam ka pehla letter designer font mein banwaate hain. Some also come to us with interesting designs they spotted on the internet. Such hairstyles are more popular with young boys who like to experiment with their look. A hair tattoo is priced between `500 and `1500.”

Looking for designs on the internet
The wackier the hair tattoo is, the more heads it will turn, say the guys! Bunty Bapang, a student who got a lizard designed on his scalp, says, “I saw a man sporting a lizard hair tattoo when I was in Nagaland. Since then, I wanted the same hairstyle.” But aren’t people amused on seeing such an unusual hairstyle? “Arre, jitna alag hoga log utna dekhenge. Aur yeh toh kuch hi dino ke liye hota hai and you can get back to your normal look within a month or two. Your hair starts growing and you are back to your normal hairstyle,” he adds.

Shekhar Sarathe, manager at Jawed Habib’s Salon, asserts, “One of my clients asked me for a dragon-style hair tattoo. We searched designs on the internet and he finally got what he was looking for. Youngsters are now very particular about their hairstyle and are up for all sorts of experimentations. Kayi log toh internet se designs download kar ke laate hain. Virat Kohli’s cropped hairstyle along with the brow-cut is quite popular with guys.”

Low maintenance, but high on style
Hair tattoos are considered a better option as one can keep changing their look. Raj Sarathe, a student who got a man’s face designed at the back of his scalp, says, “I found the pattern very interesting and decided to get it designed on my scalp. I am a very fun-loving guy and keep experimenting with my look. I once came across this hairstyle on the internet, and got a similar one.”

Sumit Sharma, a businessman, adds, “Body tattoo needs maintenance, and if you want to get it removed, you’ll have to go through a painful procedure. Baalon ka kya hai, they’ll grow in a few days and one can keep changing the hairstyle.”
